about atsuro tayama

Founded in 1982 by Japanese designer Atsuro Tayama, the eponymous brand emerged from his formative years under the mentorship of avant-garde icon Yohji Yamamoto and his tenure as chief designer at Paris-based Cacharel. After studying at Tokyo’s prestigious Bunka Fashion College, Tayama launched his womenswear label, later expanding into menswear and childrenswear.

His Paris debut in 1987, followed by his first Paris Fashion Week show in 1991, solidified his reputation for blending Japanese minimalism with French sophistication and distinctively reflected his design philosophy that “Fashion is a universal language” emphasizing on comfort and styles that encompassed the characteristics of the two genders.

Signature Soft Avant-Garde Style

The Avant-garde gained overwhelming in the 80s, when unconventional elements such as reversibility, asymmetry, knotting, frayed edges, patchwork, oversized details, loose cuts, and overlapping prints, etc wreaked havoc on the reigning design paradigm. Influenced by the movement, Atsuro Tayama founded his eponymous brand to play with these elements, thus creating a brand-new style that is at once modern and avant-garde, tough and feminine.

Renowned for soft avant-garde designs, Atsuro Tayama fuses the subtlety of Eastern influences with the relaxed, fluid silhouettes of Western fashion. Asymmetrical silhouettes, sharp cuts, and architectural forms define the brand’s signature style, balancing bold femininity with a hint of masculine edge.

Empowering Individual Expression

Atsuro Tayama’s mission is to empower wearers through soft avant-garde fashion that transcends convention, evolving each season while staying true to its roots. With intricate textures, natural fabrics, and abstract prints, the brand’s versatile, mix-and-match designs foster individual expression, seamlessly transitioning from urban offices to daily rituals, embodying fashion as both art and empowerment.
